Vikings and Hilltoppers coast to semifinal wins over Moore Catholic and New Dorp, respectively, on Nov. 1
You know it was a game that Danielle Williamsen wanted just by checking her hair.
The St. Joseph by-the-Sea senior guard, the school’s all-time leading scorer, displayed her blonde locks in an intricate ponytail lattice when she took the Petrides HS court Thursday night in Sunnyside, as the Lady Vikings squared off against Moore Catholic in the semifinals of the inaugural S.I. High School Girls’ Borough President’s Tournament.
“I guess when it’s a big game, we’ll go with the braids. It makes us look fierce,” chuckled Williamsen, whose role as team leader apparently extends to the hairstyles of her teammates.
In the end, Sea left the Mavericks tied up in knots as Williamsen scored 15 points and junior Angelina Hodgens added a game-high 20 in a 58-36 victory.
This was the first tourney game for the Lady Vikings (15-4 overall), who earned a double bye into the semis. The other team that debuted Thursday night wasn’t as fortunate as New Dorp, the top-seeded PSAL squad fell to St. Joseph Hill, 62-37.
That sets up an all-Catholic championship showdown between Sea and Hill on Saturday night at 6. The site will be either Petrides or the College of Staten Island, Willowbrook.
St. Joseph by-the-Sea 58, Moore Catholic 36
The Lady Vikings jumped out to leads of 7-0 and 13-2 before Moore closed to within four late in the first quarter. But Hodgens connected on a trey with four seconds left in the period to put Sea back in control.
“We weren’t hitting our shots and missed a lot of free throws. We weren’t perfect, but we still came out on top,” said Hodgens. “That’s a good sign.”
While Williamsen was her usual speedy self, slashing to the basket with great determination, the brawny 5-foot-10 Hodgens once again proved she can more than hold her own against taller lineups.
“I like challenges. Against bigger girls, I just try to box out and go up and get the ball,” said Hodgens. “My teammates help out, and I appreciate that. It’s something that can shift the momentum of a game.”
“We’re shorter than most teams, but we make up for that with heart,” added Williamsen.
Moore remained within striking distance, down 36-21, before a 30-second sequence midway through the third quarter that featured a trey by Madeline Lanza and consecutive steals and layups by Hodgens and Williamsen vaulted the Lady Vikings into an insurmountable 43-21 advantage.
“We had a good win against a very competitive Trenton Catholic team on Friday. Since then, we’ve just had practices and watched film to keep ready, so there’s always some worries about rust,” said Sea head coach Josh Suslak. “But we executed our game plan to the best of our ability.”
Daniella Cordova added 10 points for the Lady Vikings, while Brianna Caliri paced the Mavs with 10.
St. Joseph Hill 62, New Dorp 37
After a tight first quarter, the Hilltoppers (16-3 overall) started pulling away late in the second stanza thanks in part to a left-corner trey by Juliana Rodriguez with three seconds to go in the half, giving Hill a 29-17 cushion. It was one of five 3-pointers on the night for Rodriguez, who finished with a game-high 18 markers.
“Defense and rebounding were the keys for us,” said Hill head coach Jim Garin. “We’re deeper [than New Dorp], but they’re a talented team. We missed some jumpers against their zone early on, but then Juliana started knocking down some 3s.”
New Dorp head coach Frank Guglielmo could only shrug his shoulders.
“The ball didn’t go in. Shots that we take that normally go in just didn’t,” Guglielmo said. “We haven’t won 19 games without hitting those shots. We controlled the pace of the first quarter, but [Hill] started playing that inside-out game and we’re undersized compared to them. Still, we gained experienced on a big stage against a good team.”
Molly Keane netted 13 points and Tara Murphy added 10 for Hill. Sabrina Desio and Mya Nisbet scored nine apiece to pace the Central Cougars.
NOTES: Suslak tried to explain his team’s inconsistent offensive play. “I don’t like to make excuses, but this is the first time we’ve played in this gym. Maybe we weren’t familiar with it which might be why we were a little off, but we can’t afford that Saturday. Hill is a tough team.” … As for O’Connor’s take on the Lady Vikings: “If I knew the answer on how to beat them, we wouldn’t have lost to them a couple of times. We just have to knock down our shots and play good defense.”
