Fifth-seeded Sea Gulls advance to PSAL AAA semifinals after Oyelaja, Alimzhanov and defense fuel surprising 34-0 whitewash of No. 4 Tigers on Nov. 18
Chris App Jr. has a lot to be thankful for heading into the holiday week.
The McKee/Staten Island Tech head football coach has overseen a very competitive team in the PSAL AAA conference this season, even if not all of those results haven’t gone his way — in fact, the fifth-seeded Sea Gulls suffered four one-score setbacks heading into Saturday’s quarterfinals at No. 4 Fort Hamilton in Brooklyn.
Fortunately for App’s heartburn problems, his club prevented any suspense from creeping into the contest.
MSIT intercepted a pass on the first play from scrimmage, setting up the first of five touchdowns in a surprising 34-0 rout of the decade-removed three-time PSAL city champions and a berth in the semifinals against second-seeded Boys High on Nov. 25.
Quarterback Daniel Oyelaja ran for two TDs and passed for a third all in the first half before exiting early in the fourth period with an apparent left knee injury, the severity of which is unknown. It was the only blemish on a perfect afternoon for the Sea Gulls (4-5).
The win avenged a 36-18 loss to the Tigers (5-4) on Oct. 6 in New Dorp, a contest “where we were outcoached and outplayed. We lost a lot of games by a couple of points, but they humbled us that day,” said App. “But it doesn’t matter now, as long as you’re playing your best football in the playoffs.”
The Gulls certainly did on Saturday. On the game’s first snap, FH quarterback Aidan Farley had a pass deflected by a charging Daniel Mosley that Batyrkhan Alimzhanov caught in mid-air, returning it to the FH 2. Oyelaja ran it in from 1 yard out two plays later for a 6-0 lead.
“[Alimzhanov] is the hardest-working kid I’ve ever coach,” App said of the two-way junior, who added a bunch of critical runs from the backfield. “He’s the first one in and the last to leave the weight room. I’ve never seen a harder-working kid. And [Oyelaja] is an absolute warrior.”
Later in the quarter, a strong pass rush forced Farley to intentionally ground the ball from his end zone, giving MSIT a safety and an 8-0 edge. Four plays later, Oyelaja passed to a wide open Ethan Cadotte over the middle for a 16-yard score.
The Tigers fumbled the ensuing kickoff, and the Gulls needed just six plays to strike paydirt again. Moments after Oyelaja completed a third-and-9 pass to Gabriel DeLuca for 12 yards, the QB ran it in from 4 yards out for a 20-0 lead at the half.
Two 10-yard TD runs in the fourth quarter by Aiden Patsakos (plus a David Knight conversion carry) and Stanley Khaskelzon capped the scoring.
NOTES: Fort Hamilton appeared to have gotten on the board with about three minutes to go in the third period and trailing 20-0, but a 57-yard pass from Farley to Jawad Fares was negated when Farley was flagged for crossing the line of scrimmage before throwing the ball.
