The App family’s Thanksgiving Day plans may need to be adjusted, and that’s just fine to the McKee/Staten Island Tech head coach.

“I’ve never been in this situation before, practicing on Thanksgiving, but that’s what we’ll be doing,” said Chris App Jr., after his Sea Gulls dominated host Fort Hamilton 34-0 in a PSAL AAA quarterfinal on Saturday in Brooklyn.

“My wife is going to kill me.”

The same Turkey Day shuffle can be said for his assistant coaches — including his father, Chris App, the team’s offensive line coach; and his brother, Charlie App, MSIT’s offensive coordinator — who’ll also be busy Thursday morning prepping the fifth-seeded Sea Gulls for a semifinal clash against No. 2 Boys High on Nov. 25.

The season has been a special one for the App family, yet all three responded with the same word when asked to define the experience: Stressful.

MSIT head coach Chris App Jr., left, seems to be having a pointed conversation with his father, offensive line coach Chris App, during Saturday’s win.

“Very stressful,” said the elder App, who coached his sons when both played for him at New Dorp HS well over a decade ago. “I still have that coaching mentality. Even though we butt heads a lot, it’s still enjoyable. I thought I was done with football, but this is like another life for me. It’s hard to pull the plug on that.”

“It’s been amazing,” said App Jr., in his third season as MSIT head coach. “We’ve had our ups and downs, but it’s been really good. It’s been shared stress, as we’ve faced so much adversity this season with so many close losses.”

One that wasn’t tight was a 36-18 setback to Fort Hamilton on Oct. 6 on Staten Island.

“We felt we were out-prepared,” admitted Charlie App of that loss. “But we went in today with a clean slate, and this was the first time all year we played the way we thought we’d play like. This score may shock everyone else, but not us.”

An interception by MSIT’s Batyrkhan Alimzhanov off a deflection by pass rusher Daniel Mosley on the first play from scrimmage set up a 1-yard quarterback keeper by Daniel Oyelaja two plays later for a 6-0 lead, and the Sea Gulls never looked back.

“This season has been stressful, with seven exclamation points,” quipped Charlie App. “But moments like today, and of coaching together with my brother and father, make it all worth it.”

“I’ve always dreamed of coaching with my sons,” said the elder App, who helmed the Central Cougars for 17 seasons before stepping aside prior to the 2014 campaign. “Like I said, we’ve butted heads … but part of getting old is watching your kids grow up and letting them take over.”
