Published:Lions roar as South blanks North in annual Fugazzi Senior Bowl
Monsignor Farrell duo of Scalici and Barzal power South to 24-0 victory
Their season for Monsignor Farrell may not have culminated the way they wanted last month, but for head coach Rocco Del Priore, several of his assistants and 11 of his players, they couldn’t not have scripted a better ending Saturday.
Eleven different Lions seemingly took turns starring in the South’s 24-0 whitewash of the North in the 42nd Fred Fugazzi Senior Bowl at Farrell’s Oakwood field, with wide receiver Sal Scalici and defensive back Michael Barzal capturing offensive and defensive MVP, respectively, for the winning side.
“It couldn’t have ended better,” said Scalici, who opened the first scoring drive with two receptions and capped the third with a 14-yard touchdown pass from New Dorp quarterback Jack Kay. “These were the best four years of my life being here, and to play our last [high school] game on this field meant a lot to me and my Farrell brothers.”
“This has been a very special group of seniors here,” said Del Priore, whose Lions lost to eventual state championship Cardinal Hayes in the CHSFL semifinals on Nov. 10. “They’ve done everything right since Day One. I was glad some of them were able to play two extra weeks [including last week’s league all-star game]; and I was glad we got to showcase our field today.”
After both offenses struggled through the first quarter and a half — unlike last year’s 29-28 North victory — the South finally struck midway through the second period. Farrell QB Cristian Pinto connected on three straight passes, two to Scalici and a 21-yard toss to McKee/S.I. Tech’s Stanley Khaskelzon to move down to the North 40.
Moments later on a third-and-10 from the 30, Pinto scrambled right and lofted a pass to St. Joseph by-the-Sea’s Robert Stefanelli for 18 yards on a play North head coach Mark DeCristoforo of St. Peter’s argued was thrown beyond the line of scrimmage. On the next third down, Tottenville’s Reginald McLure weaved through traffic on the right side and carried it into the end zone with 37 seconds left in the half. Chris Digicamo’s PAT kick made it a 7-0 contest at the intermission.
A fine return of the second-half kick by the Pirates’ Survester Tarr gave the South the ball at the North 48. Five plays later, Kay arced a pass into the right side of the end zone where ND’s Zymiere Shaw outjumped Curtis’ Jayden Wright and scored. Sea’s Maksymilian Kaczor booted the extra point for a 14-0 lead.
On the ensuing possession, Susan Wagner signal-caller Jason Abella was sacked for a 12-yard loss by Farrell’s Louis Martinez, putting the North at its 12. Desperate to get his team untracked, Abella then sailed a pass down the left side only to have his receiver slip and fall, allowing Barzal to intercept and return it to the North 19.
“Our defense was very smooth. We had a great group of guys, some real athletes,” said Barzal. “This was 100 percent about bragging rights. We wanted to show which side runs the Island. It all starts up front; we shut down their running game.”
“We had a very good defensive line,” agreed Del Priore. “Aside from our guys, [Yasire] DeJesus and Martinez, we had three strong linemen from Tottenville — [Alan] Petrov, [A.J.] Azemi and [Albert] Adames.”
Four plays after Barzal’s pick, Scalici hauled in a TD pass from a scrambling Kay from 14 yards out with 4:56 remaining in the third quarter. A Kaczor PAT made it 21-0.
“It was a busted play,” recalled Scalici. “Myself and the other wide receiver on the play knew one of us would go up and the other would go down; we forgot which did what. But Kay put it on the spot. It took a little time adjusting to his passes during the week in practice. But by the time the game started, our timing was there.”
NOTES: Wide receiver Chauncey Mims (Curtis) and lineman Aquil Meredith-Smith (Moore Catholic) were named offensive and defensive MVPs for the North, respectively. … The South was made up of Farrell, Sea, Tottenville, New Dorp and MSIT. The North was comprised of Moore, St. Peter’s, Curtis, Wagner, Port Richmond and Petrides. … Kudos to the game officials for donating their time. The men in stripes included Tyler Turtoro (referee), Luis Carrion (umpire), Sam Shperling (head linesman), Billy Caldwell (line judge), Gary App (back judge), Paul Morales (side judge) and Robert Argento (field judge).
