Josiah Maye (79) of Petrides, shown during preseason practice, is nominated for the Sal Somma Award, emblematic of the Island’s top lineman. That honor, along with the Al Fabbri Award and the Dennis Barrett Award, will be announced this Sunday afternoon at 1 at Curtis HS.

Music recently held the Grammy Awards, while film fans are anxious to watch next month’s Academy Awards broadcast. Between the two events, the Staten Island high school football community will fill the void with an afternoon of honors at Curtis High School’s gym.

This Sunday at 1 p.m., the Al Fabbri Award (best player), the Sal Somma Award (top lineman) and the Dennis Barrett Award (for football, leadership and service) will be presented, stretching the 2023 gridiron season another three months.

While the Fabbri Award’s candidates will come from the yet-to-be-named list of all stars selected by the Staten Island Advance/SI Live and its advisory board, the nominees for the other two honors are known.
